If you were inspired by Wild and Eat, Pray, Love, you’ll love this extraordinary true story of a woman taking the greatest risk of her life in order to heal from the unthinkable.
After escaping an abusive marriage, Cara Brookins had four children to provide for and no one to turn to but herself. In desperate need of a home but without the means to buy one, she did something incredible.
Equipped only with YouTube instructional videos, a small bank loan and a mile-wide stubborn streak, Cara built her own house from the foundation up with a work crew made up of her four children.
It would be the hardest thing she had ever done. With no experience nailing together anything bigger than a bookshelf, she and her kids poured concrete, framed the walls and laid bricks for their two story, five bedroom house. She had convinced herself that if they could build a house, they could rebuild their broken family.
This must-read memoir traces one family’s rise from battered victims to stronger, better versions of themselves, all through one extraordinary do-it-yourself project

Amazing book! So uplifting and an amazing story of a woman who against all odds was able to do something incredible for her children. She went above and beyond for her 4 kids. Coming from a broken and abusive home, Cara did whatever it took to provide for her kids. She sacrificed and they all worked hard as a family to build their cute little house. She proves to us all that even when we are broken we can still be fixed. We can move on and have a better life!
It is amazing the perseverance that Cara had! I don’t think I could build a house by using YouTube and relying on my kids for help. Her kids are amazing and so strong! They worked so hard and helped their mom so much! It’s a fascinating story and seriously so much hard work went into building there house. I tried imaging what it would be like if my family built a house in that manner, and I just couldn’t! They had so much faith in their mom and in each other! Such an amazing story! They overcame so much and ignored the criticism from numerous people throughout the whole building process. It is ridiculous how some of those people treated her, tried to make her feel like she was incompetent and could not build and finish a her dream house on her own. Then again there were those great strangers she happened upon in the most random places that offered help and guidance.
It is truly amazing what you can do once you really put your mind to it and Cara is a true inspiration! Her journey through a broken marriage and family and ending up with a happy home for herself and children is truly amazing! If you need a great feel good story this is the one for you!
